NOTE: On 21 May 1925, Roald Amundsen and Lincoln Ellsworth (an American who financed the expedition), along with two pilots (one of whom was Hjalmar Riiser-Larsen) and two mechanics, took off from Spitsbergen, on the Svalbard Archipelago, Norway, bound for Alaska, with the goal of being the first men to fly over the North Pole. Both planes were forced to land some 150 km from the Pole, where one plane had to be abandoned. Riiser-Larsen managed to fly all six men aboard the remaining plane to Nordaustlandet, another island in the Svalbard Archipelago, where all were rescued from the sea and returned to Norway. Although the expedition failed in its goal, it generated great interest in polar exploration, and the following year, Amundsen, Ellsworth and others successfully flew over the North Pole.
